Shows test connection diagrams for typical watthour meters.

Training Sessions

Principles of Meter Operation – 6 minutes
Briefly states why meters are tested. Briefly states what a meter test consists of. Lists the general types of information needed to test meters. Briefly describes how a typical watthour meter works.

Meter In-Service Connections – 10 minutes
Describes the source and load connections for a typical single-phase meter and a typical polyphase meter. Describes the flow of current through the current and potential coils of a typical single-phase meter and a typical polyphase meter.

Test Equipment – 12 minutes
Describes the overall purpose of test equipment. Identifies equipment typically used to test meter accuracy in the field and states the function of each piece of equipment.

Test Connections and Comparisons – 8 minutes
Describes the principles for connecting test equipment to a typical single-phase meter. Describes the principles for connecting test equipment to a typical polyphase meter using the separate stator test approach. Describes the principles for connecting test equipment to a typical polyphase meter using the series test approach. Defines a watthour constant, Kh. Describes how a typical single-phase meter is compared to a standard when the Kh of the meter is different from the Kh of the standard. Describes how a typical polyphase meter is compared to a standard when the Kh of the meter is different from the Kh of the standard.

Test Connection Diagrams – 8 minutes
Identifies the following items on a typical meter test connection diagram: meter, phantom load, standard, current circuit connections, potential circuit connections, meter current coil jumper connections. Identifies these items on a typical meter internal diagram: meter form number, current coils, potential coils. Identifies these items on a typical test jack diagram: jumper connections, phantom load potential connections, current connections.
