This 54-minute video explains the theory and practice involved in using the bare-hand method to perform live transmission line repair. Covers what bare-hand repair work is, why it works, and how it is done. The basic theory of bare-hand work is presented, as well as the equipment used to perform this work. Installation of a repair sleeve is used as an example, to illustrate how the principles of bare-hand work are applied. Safety is emphasized throughout the unit.

Explains the type of planning necessary to perform a job using the bare-hand method.
Insulator Changeout, Part 1 – 7 minutes
Explains the basic tasks that must be accomplished on the “cold side” of the tower in preparation for changing out a V-string of insulators. Explains basic safety considerations that a crew follows while changing out insulators using the bare-hand method.
Insulator Changeout, Part 2 – 10 minutes
Explains the basic tasks that must be accomplished on the “hot side” in order to change out a string of insulators using the bare-hand method. Explains how a lineman comes off an energized conductor using the bare-hand method. Explains the basic safety considerations as they apply to rigging, equipment, and personnel using the bare-hand method.
Bucket Trucks and the Barehand Method – 11 minutes
Explains the specialized equipment required to work from a bucket truck using the bare-hand method. Explains the major tasks that must be accomplished and inspections that must be made on bucket trucks and bare-hand equipment prior to doing a job. Explains how to safely energize a bucket truck. Explains the basic tasks that must be accomplished to install or repair an armor rod from a bucket truck using the bare-hand method. Explains some of the key safety considerations when working bare hand from a bucket truck.
